The New York Mets are not able to overcome a rough start in Cincinnati

The New York Mets were defeated 4-3 by the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. The game took place at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. Shaun Marcum started for the Mets and pitched ok especially after a very rough start to the game. The Mets bullpen was very good and Lucas Duda and Marlon Byrd led the offense. 
Marcum is now 0-5 on the season, he pitched six innings giving up six hits and four runs. Marcum walked one and struck out seven. LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning walking two and striking out one, Brandon Lyon pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and Sean Burke pitched an inning giving up a hit.

Rick Ankiel had a hit and drew a walk, David Wright drew a walk and Duda had two hits. Byrd had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk, John Buck drew a walk and Justin Turner had a hit. Byrd hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Davis committed an error.

Johnny Cueto pitched five innings giving up three hits and three runs with four walks and eight strikeouts. Cueto improved to 2-0 on the year. Logan Ondrusek pitched a perfect inning striking out two, J.J. Hoover pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Sean Marshall pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one. Jonathan Broxton pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Aroldis Chapman picked up his ninth save of the season pitching a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts.

Shin-Soo Choo drew two walks, Joey Votto had two hits and drew a walk and Brandon Phillips had a hit and two RBI. Jay Bruce had two hits and two RBI, Xavier Paul had a hit and Ryan Hanigan had a hit. Cueto had a hit, Bruce hit a double and hit a homerun. The Reds were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Phillips hit a two run single and Bruce hit an RBI double. Byrd hit a three run homerun in the third inning to tie the game at three. Bruce hit a solo homerun in the sixth to give the Reds a 4-3 lead and that would be the final score.

The Mets record fell to 17-25 and the Reds record improved to 27-18. The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.
